Culver City High School dives into winter sports

The holidays are over, and winter is here and that means high schools all around the nation are playing winter sports. At the majority of high schools in Southern California winter sports consist of girls and boys basketball, girls water polo and girls and boys soccer. Although all five of the Culver City teams are competitive the basketball teams appear to be at the top of the list when it comes to comparing records.

The boys' basketball team at press time was 16-2 overall and 1-0 in the Ocean league and the girls were 10-6 and 2-0 in the Ocean league. Boys' soccer was 6-5 and 2-0 in the Ocean league, girls water polo was 4-2 overall and girl's scorer was 2-5 overall and 1-0 in the Ocean league.

The boys' basketball team is hoping to continue to play at a high level because their next two league games next week are against two of the better teams in the league, 14-5 Lawndale and 14-6 Inglewood. They face Lawndale at home on the Culver City campus on Wednesday, January 15, at 7:30 p.m. and they travel to play Inglewood at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, January 17.

"We just need to continue to get better every day," said Culver City boys head coach basketball coach Ray Singleton this week after practice. "We need to continue to do our jobs as players and coaches. On offense we need to play with poise and pace and move without the ball and that will help us execute our half court offense. We are learning from our mistakes, and we need to understand regardless of who we play it's go time when step out on the court."

Team spirit is evident when you watch the Centaurs boy's basketball team play. "This team has a lot of camaraderie and that starts with the players that played football under coach Jahmal (Wright). The football program creates a lot of energy and pride in Culver City."

The girls' basketball team will battle 12-6 Lawndale next Wednesday at 6 p.m. at home and they also travel to 2-8 Inglewood on Friday, January 17. That game time is set for 6 p.m. The boys' soccer team will play Lawndale at home on January 15, at 5 p.m. and they will face Inglewood on Friday, January 17, on the Culver City campus at 5 p.m. The girls' soccer team will play Inglewood at home at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, January 17.
