Kings continue to play good defense but need more road wins

The Los Angeles Kings have firmly established themselves as one of the NHL's top defensive teams, a key factor behind their impressive 18-9-4 record. Currently sitting second in the Pacific Division, they trail the Vegas Golden Knights by just three points. Their defensive strength has been pivotal, as they rank second in the league for fewest goals allowed, behind only the Dallas Stars. However, road performances remain a concern, as is evident in their 8-7-3 record away from home.

Tuesday night's 3-2 overtime loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins highlighted the Kings' continued struggles on the road. Right wing Rickard Rakell completed the Penguins' comeback with a wrist shot in overtime, leaving the Kings with a 2-2 record on their seven-game road trip and winless (0-3) in overtime games this season. Head coach Jim Hiller summed up their performance in his post-game remarks. "We just weren't sharp."

Offensively, the Kings have struggled to generate high shot volumes, which has placed extra pressure on their defense and goaltending. Addressing this imbalance could prove critical. Reports suggest the team is exploring trade options to acquire a young player who can fill key gaps in the lineup. With the NHL trade deadline still months away and a playoff run in sight, the Kings appear poised to explore all options to bolster their postseason aspirations.

Quinton Byfield (RW) continues to be a focal point of discussion. Despite signing a four-year contract in the offseason, he has underperformed, with just four goals, nine assists, and 13 points in 31 games. However, his recent performance against the New York Rangers displayed flashes of his potential, especially with impressive puck control and playmaking ability. If Byfield can find any kind of consistency, it would go a long way in boosting the team's overall potential.

The Kings will look to regain momentum on their road trip when they face the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday, December 19th. The Kings return home on December 28, for a five-game home stand.
