A USC win against Rutgers and the consistency of Woody Marks

The USC Trojans routed the Rutgers Scarlet Knights at home last Friday night, winning 42-20, but this victory does little to alter the team's narrative for the season. While the scoreboard suggests a turning point, a closer look reveals that Rutgers, also coming off a three-game losing streak, was a team USC was expected to dominate. Although the win boosted team morale, it leaves lingering questions about the Trojans' ability to perform under pressure against tougher Big Ten competition.

After a series of disappointing fourth-quarter collapses-a combined 11 points separating USC from their last three losses-this win offers little reassurance. "Great to get the win. Excited locker room in there... to see the guys with big smiles on their faces," noted Head Coach Lincoln Riley after the Rutgers game. The Trojans still need to demonstrate that they can close out games in high-stakes situations.

Although the box score hints at progress, USC must do more to regain momentum. Rutgers' only notable wins this season came against Washington and Virginia Tech, neither of which carries the weight of a signature victory that USC is seeking.

Amidst the inconsistency, one bright spot has emerged, senior running back Woody Marks. His performance has been a reliable force, showcasing impressive production week after week. Marks has rushed for 755 yards on 133 carries, averaging 5.7 yards per attempt, along with eight rushing touchdowns. When asked about his play, Marks said, "Just living up to the standard... just be some hungry people out there, just be free and play the game how it's supposed to be played."

Marks is also effective as a receiver, leading the Trojans with 30 receptions and ranking fourth in receiving yards with 234. He has rushed for over 100 yards in four games, nearly reaching that milestone against Rutgers with 94 yards and three touchdowns.

His consistency is evident in the last four games:

• Rutgers: 15 carries, 94 yards, 3 TDs

• Maryland: 17 carries, 82 yards, 1 TD

• Penn State: 20 carries, 111 yards

• Minnesota: 20 carries, 134 yards, 1 TD

Looking ahead, USC faces the Washington Huskies next Saturday on the road at 4:30 p.m. Both teams sit at 4-4 overall, with USC at 2-4 in conference play compared to the Huskies' 2-3 record. This matchup presents another opportunity for the Trojans to demonstrate consistency and build on their performance from last week.
