West Basin Announces Six Events To Give Away Free Rain Barrels

Registration is open for service area residents to pick up free, 50-gallon rain barrels

The West Basin Municipal Water District (West Basin) is making water conservation accessible to people who want an easy way to incorporate sustainability into their lives. West Basin will host six drive-through rain barrel pick-up events at locations throughout the service area to give away 1,500 barrels.

The program begins on Saturday, November 16, 2024, and concludes on Saturday, January 25, 2025. Interested participants must register at http://www.westbasin.org/rain-barrels to qualify for up to two free 50-gallon rain barrels valued at approximately $80 each.

"Water conservation is crucial in our region, and our rain barrel program empowers people to make a practical difference without even having to think about it because the rain barrel does all the work for them," said West Basin Board President and Division III Director Desi Alvarez. "By collecting and using rainwater, we can reduce our reliance on imported water and help preserve our precious resources."

West Basin's rain barrel program is part of a District-wide water efficiency program that aims to reduce demand on imported water supplies by making conservation and water-efficient practices a "California Way of Life." Depending on the water year conditions, one rain barrel can save up to 620 gallons of water per year. This rainwater capture feature also qualifies service area residents for West Basin's Grass Replacement Rebate Program of up to $15,000 for grass removal on residential properties.

The six opportunities to pick up a free rain barrel include:

• Lomita, Saturday, December 14

• Malibu, Saturday, January 11

• Rolling Hills Estates, Saturday, January 25
