Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said local police are on "alert" after looting and violence occurred across the city following the Los Angeles Dodgers' World Series win.
"As we celebrate this achievement tonight and in the coming days, violence will not be tolerated. LAPD is currently on tactical alert and has activated a strategic plan to protect communities and businesses, which includes proactive deployment and coordinated strategy with regional partners to ensure that all Angelenos are able to celebrate safely," Bass said in a statement Wednesday.
The Dodgers won the World Series on Wednesday evening, beating the New York Yankees in Game 5. After the game, supporters took to the streets of Los Angeles to celebrate and clashed with law enforcement officers.
Bass said local police were activated, and the city's Emergency Operations Center was activated to Level 3, meaning staff were in person and coordinating across departments. Four command posts throughout the city would "help promote safety following the game."
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) posted on social media that the World Series revelers had become a "hostile crowd," surrounding a public bus and attempted to set it on fire. Officers told individuals to leave the area, and people threw projectiles at LAPD members.
LAPD announced several businesses in the area had been looted, and several dispersal orders had been given to individuals on the street. The agency said "arrests have been made."
"It was requested to celebrate responsibly," LAPD posted.
