Culver City high school boys football faces a must win situation

During a season some teams play games that can make or break their season. One game that they play can determine league standings or making the playoffs. In the case of the Culver City varsity boys football team both scenarios apply to the Centaurs when they travel to Lawndale to face the Cardinals on Friday night, at 7 p.m. in this Bay league contest.

The Bay league is one of the best and most competitive football leagues in Southern California. Inglewood is in first place with a league record of 3-0 (8-0), Palos Verdes is in second at 2-1 (4-4), Mira Costa is in third place at 2-1 (5-3), Leuzinger is in fourth place with a record of 1-2 (6-2), Culver City is in fifth place at 1-2 (6-2) and Lawndale is at the bottom at 0-3 (2-6). The league is so tight right now only Inglewood is guaranteed a playoff spot depending on what happens in the next two weeks.

The next two weeks will determine who goes to the playoffs and who stays home. The drama begins on Friday night when the Centaurs battle Lawndale and Palos Verdes plays Inglewood. If Culver City beats Lawndale and Inglewood beats Palos Verdes both teams will go into the final regular season league games with identical 2-2 league records. If both teams are tied at the in of the regular season the Centaurs will move ahead of Palos Verdes in the standings because they beat the Sea Kings on October 4.

On Friday November 1, in the final regular season games in the Bay league, Culver City faces Inglewood and Palos Verdes plays Mira Costa. Even if Culver City loses to Inglewood and Palos Verdes loses to Mira Costa the Centaurs would make the playoffs as one of the four teams in the Bay league. The fourth-place team in the league is not guaranteed a spot in the playoffs but because the league is so good it's a good possibility. But first things first, they must beat Lawndale.

"We know what's on the line," said Culver City head football coach Jahmal Wright in a telephone interview last Sunday night. "We have the type of team that is intelligent enough to know what's in front of them. We will approach this week like a playoff game and really come out on Friday focused and ready to play. Our players know how important this game is."

Long time assistant coach Cornel Myles has experienced many similar situations during his over 30-year coaching career at Culver City. "First of all, we will have to come together and have the same mind set. We will have to work hard in practice this week. We have to be hungry when you have your back against the wall. We have to come out fighting. We need to make plays, and we can't take any plays off. The coaches can put the players in the right position, but they have to make the plays. It's going to come down to motivation and determination. We have the talent so if the players step up, we have a good chance to win the game on Friday."
