The Santa Monica College (SMC) Theatre Arts Department will perform "Angels in America, Part One: Millennium Approaches" Sept. 27 - Oct. 6 in the Theatre Arts Main Stage on the SMC Main Campus, 1900 Pico Blvd., Santa Monica.
"Angels in America, Part One: Millennium Approaches" tells the story of two troubled couples - one gay, one straight - facing different challenges as the AIDS crisis explodes in the 1980s. The play, spiced with a bit of fantasia, looks at the social, sexual, and religious implications of the deadly illness.
The renowned play was written by Tony Kushner, who received both a Pulitzer Prize and a Tony Award for the popular work, which was also adapted for television and won an Emmy Award.
The SMC production is directed by Dr. Adrianne Harrop.
Show times are 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 27 and Oct. 4, and Saturday, Sept. 28 and Oct. 5. Matinees are at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 29 and Oct. 6. All performances subject to change or cancellation without notice.
Advance (pre-sale) tickets, which range from $22 to $25 ($18 for SMC students and staff) plus a modest service charge, can be purchased online at smc.edu/tickets at any time, or by calling 310-434-4165 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday through Friday. Tickets purchased on performance weekends at the Events Box Office (at the Theatre Arts building) are $3 higher.
