President Joe Biden announced today he is dropping his bid for re-election as President amidst growing pressure from fellow Democrats.
Leaders in the Democratic Party had been saying that Biden's path back to the White House had disappeared.
With the Democratic Convention less than one month away this has thrown the party into turmoil over who to select to lead the ticket. Leaders in the Democratic o\party have been calling for Biden' withdrawal since the embarrassing debate with Former President Donald Trump last month.
"It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President," Biden said in a written statement. "And while it has been my intenton to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and my country for me to stand down and to focus solely on my duties as President for the rest of my term."
The announcement is a reminder of the one made by President Lyndon Johnson 55 years ago when decided not to seek re-election in 1968.
President Johnson said, "With America's sons in the fields far away, with America's future under challenge right here at home, with our hopes and the world's hopes for peace in the balance every day, I do not believe that I should devote an hour or a day of my time to any personal partisan causes or to any duties other than the awesome duties of this office--the Presidency of your country." "Accordingly, I shall not seek, and I will not accept, the nomination of my party for another term as your President."
Richard Nixon ultimately defeated Hubert Humphrey, the Democratic nominee in the general election.
Vice President Kamala Harris appears to be in one of the best positions to garner the nomination although other Democratic leaders a likely to enter the race. Red
Biden endorsed Harris in his announcement.
"It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President," Biden said in a written statement. "And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and my country for me to stand down and to focus solely on my duties as President for the rest of my term."
