Centaurs Look To Stay Unbeaten This Summer On The Gridiron

Culver City high school's varsity football team with try to stay unbeaten this summer when they battle a group of talented schools in the Culver City Invitational Passing Tournament that starts this Saturday at 9 a.m. at Culver City High School. The Centaurs are 12-0 this summer after going 7-0 in the El Rancho Tournament and 5-0 at the Redondo Union Tournament on June 22.

The Centaurs appear to have talent at every position according to head football coach Jahmal Wright. "I am excited," said Wright last Monday in a telephone interview. "We have a lot of talent and a lot of speed. I feel good about this team because we have a lot of experience retuning from last year."

Culver City will get another opportunity to showcase that talent on Saturday at home when 14 competitive schools come to Culver City High School for what looks like a great mixture of schools from the Southern California area. On Friday Culver City will also host a freshman/sophomore passing tournament starting at 5 p.m.

Carson, El Rancho, Hawkins, King Drew, Lancaster, Loyola, Long Beach Wilson, Mira Costa, North Torrance, Palmdale, Palisades, Santa Monica, Salesian and Torrance will compete in the varsity tournament. It's a solid mixture of CIF and Los Angeles City schools.

These 7 on 7 passing tournaments give players an opportunity give coaches a second look before the fall season starts. Culver City's star quarterback from last year, Sammie Silvia has moved on to college. Now it's a battle of two players for the coveted position. Sophomore Nicholas Hoang and senior Seth Shigg are even right now according to coach Wright. "Both quarterbacks are doing a great job right now," said Wright.

Culver City has been known for having outstanding receivers and this year it looks like they will continue that tradition. "Our group of receivers is one of our strengths," said Wright. "We have a lot of experience with Myles (Singleton) and Braylon (Singleton) who are seniors and Justin Hoang who is also a senior." Other receivers that will be getting a lot of playing time according to Wright are Harley Moore, Mark Fourte, William Fourte, and Zytel Boyd.

"The defensive backfield is also doing a great job this summer and so are the linebackers and we have size on the line with players like Jonas Ross and Darryl Davis," said Wright. "We have talent on every level."

The Centaurs are going to need that talent if they expect to have a winning season and make the playoffs. They open the regular fall season at home against San Jacinto on August 30. On September 6, they stay at home to face Harbor City Narbonne. They make their first road trip of the season when they travel to Salesian in East Los Angeles on September 13 and on September 20, they stay on the road against Warren.

The Centaurs have another road game when they travel a short distance to Dorsey on September 27 and they return home to face Palos Verdes on October 4. They have another home game against Mira Costa on October 11 and they stay at home to battle Leuzinger on October 18. Their final two games are on the road against Lawndale on October 25 and the final regular season contest is against Inglewood on November 1. All of the games are on Fridays and will start at 7 p.m.
