The National Football League announced their full 2024 schedule on Wednesday evening and the schedule would seem to be very favorable to the Los Angeles Chargers. The Chargers open with their rival, the Las Vegas Raiders at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood in Week 1. The Raiders are coming off an 8-9 season in 2023 and have not determined who their starting quarterback will be for next season.
The Chargers follow-up in Week 2 with a road game at Charlotte against the Carolina Panthers. The Panthers are coming off a 2-15 season, the worst in the NFL. The Week 3 schedule will give new head coach Jim Harbaugh a tough test on the road. Harbaugh is trying to turn the Chargers into a physical team that can impose its will on their opponent, and the Steelers will offer a good early test for his team.
In Week 4, the Chargers return home to face the Super Bowl champions, the Kansas Chiefs. Week 5 is a bye week for the Chargers, just as Week 5 in 2023 was a bye week. The Chargers return to the road in Week 6 at Denver and in Week 7 at Arizona. The first seven weeks of the season has the Chargers playing just two games at home.
In Week 8 through Week 12, the Chargers will play four home games in five weeks, starting with the New Orleans Saints at SoFi Stadium in Week 8. In Week 9 they hit the road again at Cleveland against the Browns before returning for three consecutive home games at SoFi Stadium against the Tennessee Titans, Cincinnati Bengals, and Baltimore Ravens. The matchup against the Ravens will feature Ravens head coach John Harbaugh in the Battle of the Brothers.
The Chargers return to the road in Week 13 against the Atlanta Falcons and also in Week 14 against the Kansa City Chiefs. They return home for the next two games against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 15 and the Denver Broncos in Week 16.
In Week 17, the Chargers travel to New England to play the Patriots and in Week 18, the Chargers take on the Raiders in Las Vegas. The days and times for those games will be determined later in the season. The Patriots are coming off a 4-13 season in 2023 and are rebuilding, but this game in late December will likely be played in very cold conditions, which is not something the Chargers are accustomed to.
The Chargers will have just three games in prime time and none on Thursday Night. They have the Week 7 matchup on Monday Night at Arizona vs the Cardinals. The Week 7 Monday night matchup between the Chargers and Cardinals will be broadcast exclusively on ESPN+. They have a Week 12 Monday Night matchup with the Baltimore Ravens at SoFi Stadium and a Week 14 matchup with the Chiefs at Kansas City on Sunday Night.
Opening up with the Raiders followed by the Panthers on the road would seem to be favorable to the Chargers. The Chargers have not started the season at 2-0 since the 2012 season. It would help Harbaugh and the Chargers to get off to a fast start in 2024.
The Chargers will benefit from playing the NFC South this season and will also benefit from the fact that they were a last place team in the AFC West in 2023, which means the Chargers will be playing last place division teams from 2023 in the other three AFC divisions. Seven of the 17 games on the 2024 schedule are against teams with a winning record in 2023. The Chargers have the easiest strength of schedule of any team in the AFC, based on the 2023 records of each team.
