Bryan "Bubba" Fish kicked-off his bid for Culver City Council on Saturday, January 27th with an event in the city's Arts District neighborhood.
Over a hundred supporters were at Syd Kronenthal Park, where Bubba Fish announced his candidacy for a seat on the of Culver City City Council. Featured speakers also included Culver City Mayor Yasmine-Imani McMorrin, Councilmember Freddy Puza, and Former Mayor Daniel Lee, who all gave their endorsement of his campaign.
"It is so critical that we have good people who are thinking of all of us, who are thinking about our children, who are thinking about the future of the city, and how it can be sustainable in support of all," said Mayor McMorrin. "I am really confident that Bubba is going to be able to have that in mind, and bring that lens to the dais."
In his speech, Bubba Fish described his compassionate and clear-eyed approach to solving problems, as he addressed serious issues facing the city, including challenges with transportation, housing, and homelessness.
"You don't have to be unhoused to know that our housing market is quickly becoming unattainable for anyone but the super wealthy," Fish told the crowd. "If we want Culver City to stay a vibrant place where people of all ages, races, and backgrounds can make a life here, we must build more affordable housing and protect our tenants."
Housing and Homelessness have long been a focus of the candidate's civic involvement. Bubba Fish served for several years as Vice Chair of Culver City's Housing & Homelessness Advisory Committee, and helped organize and conduct the city's Homeless Count in both 2022 and 2023.
As a transportation policy analyst–and activist–Bubba Fish also made finding sustainable transportation solutions an emphasis of his professional and volunteer activities, working to improve ease, access, safety, and enjoyment for all transportation users.
"In my role at the Los Angeles Department of Transportation, I've seen firsthand how impactful policy can drive transformational change," he said at the launch event. "As Co-Director of State Policy at Streets for All, I sponsored several bills that are now law to make our streets and communities safer for everyone."
Bubba Fish also served on the steering committee of Bike Culver City, a local organization with a mission to improve the city's transportation options, and spearheaded efforts to create Culver City's first Slow Streets program, providing families with safe outdoor space to enjoy their neighborhoods.
Fish also co-created and organized Culver City's first and only official Pride celebration–Culver City Pride Ride & Rally, which is now an annual event approaching its fourth year, and still the largest Pride Ride in the region.
Bubba Fish (he/him) has been active in community service since he moved to Culver City seven years ago. He is a renter living in East Culver City with his husband of five years, Aaron, and their puppy, Walter. He would be only the second openly LGBTQ+ person elected to Culver City Council in the city's 100+ year history.
Fish's candidacy has already received a slew of endorsements from elected leaders, including Culver City Mayor Yasmine-Imani McMorrin and West Hollywood Mayor John Erickson, as well as dozens of City Committee members, Culver City residents, and business owners. Concluding his speech at the kick-off event, Bubba Fish said, "I am filled with hope today, because I know we are capable of making lasting, impactful change.
"There are so many ways we can leverage our resources to make Culver City a safe, vibrant place for everyone. But only if we stand together and demand it. I am running for Culver City Council to make sure that no matter who you are, or how much money you make, or how you choose to get around, you can thrive here."
The Culver City Council election will be held with the U.S. General Election on Tuesday, November 5, 2024. Culver City residents are encouraged to vote.
