2023 NFL Power Rankings – Week 09

1. Philadelphia Eagles (7-1): The Eagles moved to 7-1 for the season after defeating the Commanders on the road, 38-31. Quarterback Jalen Hurts was named the Week 8 NFC Offensive Player of the Week by the NFL after throwing four touchdown passes. 2. Baltimore Ravens (6-2): A week after the Ravens routed the Lions 38-6, the Raven struggled to beat the Cardinals, 31-24. Running back Gus Edwards rushed for three touchdowns in the victory. 3. Jacksonville Jaguars (6-2): Quarterback Trevor Lawrence threw for 292 yards and the Jaguars defense held the Steelers to ten points to move to 6-2 for the season. 4. Miami Dolphins (6-2): Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa threw for 324 yards and three touchdowns in a 31-17 win over the Patriots on the road. Wide receiver Jaylen Waddle and wide receiver Tyreek Hill both caught touchdown passes, and both went over 100 yards in receiving. 5. Detroit Lions (6-2): The Lions dominated the Raiders on Monday Night, winning 26-14. The Lions had a 486-157 edge in total yardage in the game. Rookie running back Jahmyr Gibbs rushed for 152 yards and had 37 yards in receptions in the win. 6. Kansas City Chiefs (6-2): Quarterback Patrick Mahomes was feeling ill, and his teammates played like they were ill, as the Chiefs were upset by the Broncos in Denver, 24-9. The Chiefs had five turnovers in the game. Next: -2.5 vs Miami Dolphins - Sun, Nov. 5 – O/U: 50.5 (ATS: 5-3 – O/U: 2-6)

7. Dallas Cowboys (5-2): The Cowboys absolutely crushed the Rams 43-20 on Sunday, The Rams forgot to cover wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, who caught 12 passes for 158 yards and two touchdowns. Rookie kicker Brandon Aubrey has made all 18 of his field goal attempts, which tied an NFL record. Aubrey nailed a 58-yarder on Sunday against the Rams. 8. Seattle Seahawks (5-2): The Seahawks beat the Browns on Sunday to move into first place in the NFC West. Former UCLA wide receiver Jake Bobo scored his third touchdown of the season on a three-yard touchdown run. Bobo scored three touchdowns in his first four seasons with Duke, then scored seven touchdowns with UCLA last season. Bobo is just a better player when he is on the west coast. 9. San Francisco 49ers (5-3): Christian McCaffrey scored both 49ers touchdowns, extending his consecutive touchdown streak to 17 games, which tied the NFL record set by Lenny Moore in 1963-64. McCaffrey could not save the 49ers from a third consecutive loss, 31-17 to the Bengals. The 49ers traded a third-round draft pick to the Commanders for Chase Young, which should help the defense. 10. Cleveland Browns (4-3): Backup quarterback PJ Walker had three turnovers in a 24-20 loss to Seattle. Starting quarterback Deshaun Watson has missed three games this season and has only played in ten games over the past three seasons due to off the field issues and injuries on the field. Watson signed a 5-year, $230 million dollar guaranteed contract, with a dead cap number in 2024 of $200 million. Watson will be a Cleveland Brown in 2024. 11. Buffalo Bills (5-3): Rookie tight end tight end Dalton Kincaid, a first-round draft pick out of Utah, caught 5 passes for 65 yards and one touchdown, and quarterback Josh Allen threw for 324 yards and rushed for 41 yards in a 24-18 win over the Buccaneers in Buffalo. Next: +2.5 at Cincinnati Bengals - Sun, Nov. 5 – O/U: 48.5 (ATS: 3-5 – O/U: 3-5)

12. Pittsburgh Steelers (4-3): The Steelers lost 20-10 to the Jaguars at home on Sunday. The Steelers are ranked 30th in total yardage per game and 29th in points per game but have somehow managed to get to 4-3 at this point of the season. Next: -2.5 vs Tennessee Titans – Thu, Nov. 2 – O/U: 36.5 (ATS: 4-3 – O/U: 1-6)

13. Cincinnati Bengals (4-3): Quarterback Joe Burrow was selected the Week 8 AFC Offensive Player of the week in leading the Bengals to a 31-17 win over the 49ers. Burrow completed 28 of 32 passes for 283 yards and three touchdowns, while adding 43 yards rushing. Next: -2.5 vs Buffalo Bills – Sun, Nov. 5 – O/U 48.5 (ATS: 3-3-1 – O/U: 3-4)

14. Minnesota Vikings (4-4): The Vikings won their third straight game to get to a 4-4 record. The bad news is that quarterback Kirk Cousins tore his Achilles and is done for the season. The Vikings traded a sixth-round draft pick to acquire quarterback Joshua Dobbs of the Cardinals. Dobbs will not start this weekend but should be ready by Week 10. 15. New York Jets (4-3): The Jets trailed the Giants 10-7 with less than a minute left in the game but managed to tie the game and win in overtime, 13-10. Giant kicker Graham Gano missed two field goals, which we will attribute to the smoke-n-mirrors from the Jets. Next: +3 vs Los Angeles Chargers - Mon, Nov. 6 – O/U: 41.5 (ATS: 4-2-1 – O/U: 3-4)

16. Atlanta Falcons (4-4): The Falcons decided to bench quarterback Desmond Ritter, but that did not prevent a loss to the Titans. Quarterback Taylor Heinicke completed 12 of 21 passes for 175 yards and a touchdown, all in the second half. He should remain the starter. 17. New Orleans Saints (4-4): Quarterback Derek Carr threw for 310 yards and two touchdowns in leading the Saints to a win over the Colts. Carr is the Raiders franchise leader in passing yards and passing touchdowns, yet ex-Raider head coach Josh McDaniels wanted him out. The Saints appreciate Carr. 18. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3-4): The Buccaneers competed on the road, but once again fell short, losing to the Bills, 24-18. The Bucs move the ball on offense but have struggled to convert offensive drives into touchdowns. Next: +3 at Houston Texans - Sun, Nov. 5 – O/U: 40 (ATS: 4-3 – O/U: 1-6)

19. Tennessee Titans (3-4): Rookie quarterback Will Levis threw four touchdown passes in his first NFL action to lead the Titans to a win over the Falcons. Three of the touchdown passes went to DeAndre Hopkins, who arose from the dead to have his best game of the season. Levis should be the starter for the remainder of the season. Next: +2.5 at Pittsburgh Steelers – Thu, Nov. 5 – O/U: 36.5 (ATS: 4-3 – O/U: 2-5)

19. Indianapolis Colts (3-5): The Colts fell to the Saints, 38-27 at home. The Colts gave up 511 yards in offense to the Saints, which is a bad sign for a team that is trying to hang in for a playoff berth. The defense has to be better than that. Next: -2.5 at Carolina Panthers – Sun, Nov. 5 – O/U: 44.5 (ATS: 4-4 – O/U: 6-2)

21. Los Angeles Chargers (3-4): The Chargers moved to 3-4 with a victory over the Bears. When quarterback Justin Herbert plays well, the Chargers can beat anyone. But the team is really dependent on Herbert overcoming the lack of a running game, and Herbert overcoming the porous pass defense. That is a lot to ask every game from the franchise quarterback. He could use some help. Next: -3.5 at New York Jets - Mon, Nov. 6 – O/U: 41.5 (ATS: 3-4 – O/U: 2-5)

22. Houston Texans (3-4): Quarterback C.J. Stroud threw for just 140 and yards and was able to produce just 13 points in a 15-13 loss to quarterback Bryce Young and the Panthers. Another tough loss for Houston sports fans following the elimination of the Astros. Next: -3 vs Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Sun, Nov. 5 – O/U 40 (ATS: 4-3 – O/U: 2-5)

23. Washington Commanders (3-5): The Commanders suffered another close loss to the Eagles, this time 38-31. The Commanders decided it was time to unload some of their best defensive line talent, trading defensive end Chase Young to the 49ers for a third-round pick and trading defensive end Montez Sweat to the Bears for a second-round pick. They don't have to worry about re-signing either player, but it sure looks like they are quitting on the 2023 season. 24. Los Angeles Rams (3-5): The Rams lost to the Cowboys 43-20, in a game that was not as close as the final score indicated. The Cowboys led 33-3 late in the second quarter. It would be easy to conclude that the Rams are not a playoff team. Next: +3 at Green Bay Packers – Sun, Nov. 5 – O/U: 39.5 (ATS: 4-3-1 – O/U: 3-5)

25. Denver Broncos (3-5): The Broncos are on two-game winning streak after shocking the Chiefs, 24-9. Safety Justin Simmons was selected as Week 8 AFC Defensive Player of the Week. Simmons had an interception, a fumble recovery, a pass defended and two solo tackles. The victory was the first by the Broncos against the Chiefs since 2015, ending a 16-game losing streak to the Chiefs. 26. Las Vegas Raiders (3-5): The Raiders lost another game, this time to the Lions in Detroit. That was enough for owner Mark Davis, who fired head coach Josh McDaniels and General Manager Dave Ziegler on Tuesday. We can already hear the "Bring back Chucky" chants. 27. Green Bay Packers (2-5): The Packers were only able to score 10 points in a loss to the Vikings. The difference between Aaron Rodgers and Jordan Love at quarterback is like the difference between night and day. Love has struggled with his accuracy and Rodgers is one of the most accurate quarterbacks in NFL history. Next: -3 vs Los Angeles Rams - Sun, Nov. 5 – O/U: 39.5 (ATS: 3-4 – O/U: 3-4)

28. Chicago Bears (2-6): The Bears lost to the Chargers on Sunday night, 30-13. The lack of a pass rush has not helped the Bears, who have a league low of 10 sacks through eight games. To help solve that problem, the Bears traded a second-round pick to the Commanders for defensive end Montez Sweat, who has 6.5 sacks in eight games. Sweat is a free agent, so the Bears will need to pay him. Next: +7.5 at New Orleans Saints - Sun, Nov. 5 – O/U: 41 (ATS: 2-5-1 – O/U: 6-2)

29. New England Patriots (2-6): The Patriots were held to 218 yards in offense in their loss to the Dolphins. Things keep getting worse for the Pats. They lost wide receiver Kendrick Bourne to an ACL injury for the season. Next: -3.5 vs Washington Commanders – Sun, Nov. 5 – O/U: 40.5 (ATS: 2-6 – O/U: 3-5)

30. New York Giants (2-6): The Giants had 203 yards in total offense and a minus-9 yards passing for the game in an overtime loss to the Jets. Head coach Brian Daboll was a genius with quarterback Josh Allen in Buffalo, but coaching Tyrod Taylor and Tommy DeVito is a bit more challenging. Next: +1.5 at Las Vegas Raiders – Sun, Nov. 5 – O/U: 37.5 (ATS: 2-5-1 – O/U: 1-7)

31. Carolina Panthers (1-6): The Panthers finally won their first game, defeating the Texans, 15-13 on a 23-yard field goal by Eddy Pineiro with no time left on the clock. The Bears own the Panthers first-round draft pick, so every Panther win brings a tear to the eyes of Bear fans. Next: +2.5 vs Indianapolis Colts - Sun, Nov. 5 – O/U: 44.5 (ATS: 1-5-1 – O/U: 3-4)

32. Arizona Cardinals (1-7): The Cardinals have the worst record in the NFL after another loss, this time to the Ravens, 31-24. The Cardinals decided to do the Vikings a solid and traded quarterback Joshua Dobbs to the Vikings for a 6th round draft pick. Rookie Clayton Tune will be the likely starter for Week 9, although Kyler Murray could start or backup if he is activated.
