As National Nutrition Month Begins, Agriculture Secretary Vilsack to Travel to California, Highlight USDA and California's Efforts to Support Students' Access to Healthy, Nutritious School Meals with California First Partner Siebel Newsom & Congressman Garamendi

On Monday, March 6, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack will travel to Contra Costa County, California. There, he will join local, state, and federal stakeholders, including California First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom, California State Superintendent Tony Thurmond, and Congressman John Garamendi, and visit a local school where he will highlight how under the Biden-Harris Administration, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is working to ensure students in California and across the country have access to healthy, nutritious school meals. Ensuring children have consistent access to meals that support their health and well-being is a key aspect of the Biden-Harris Administration's National Strategy on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health, which committed to ending hunger and reducing diet-related diseases, and health disparities by 2030. The school visit in California, the first state to permanently extend free, healthy school meals to all students, comes as National Nutrition Month begins and at the start of National School Breakfast Week.

During the visit, Secretary Vilsack, First Partner Siebel Newsom, State Superintendent Thurmond and Congressman Garamendi will celebrate National Nutrition Month, and hear more about the school's innovative farm-to-school program. Supporting schools in incorporating local foods in their school meals operations is a priority for USDA and part of the Department's efforts to transform the nation's food system, in part by improving food and agricultural supply-chain resiliency and increasing local food consumption around the

country.
