A homeless man was severely injured when he was hit in the head with a hammer and then robbed in Culver City on Wednesday, police said.

The Culver City Police Department received a call at 5:30 a.m. regarding a man who was bleeding profusely from a head wound at the Shell Gas Station on 3801 Sepulveda Blvd.

When officers arrived at the scene, the victim told the officers he was sleeping in his tent in a nearby encampment when two people assaulted him.

"The suspects took the victim’s property and fled the area in an unknown direction."

Police said the assailants stole $5oo in cash and a Samsung Galaxy cell phone from the victim.

The Culver City Fire Department transported the man to a local hospital where he was listed in critical condition and undergoing emergency surgery, police said.
