Rick Crocker Memorial 5K Run

"Two Marines killed, several wounded. I was hesitant to write about this, however, it's the reality of this place. Everyone in the battalion is getting through this."

- Ricardo Crocker, in one of his e-mail dispatches to his Santa Monica Police Department colleagues

About 100 runners took place in the second Rick Crocker memorial run on Thursday 5.2622. The run started at the Santa Monica Pier

Inglewood mayor James Butts said "I hired Rick Crocker, we all loved the guy." Butts was the police chief while Crocker worked for the SMPD. Thursday was the 17th anniversary of his death, while serving as a Marine.

The run benefits the Police Activities League. Crocker died in 2005, while on active duty in Iraq. The reservist was killed by an improvised explosive device.

A life-size cutout photograph of Crocker in his combat gear stood in the Santa Monica Police Department's detective squad bureau. He had already come back from one tour in Iraq and they expected him to return safely again, says the Dept. website.
