The National PTA has named El Rincon the winner of the 2022 Jan Harp Domene Diversity and Inclusion Award! El Rincon Elementary is the only individual school in the nation to be given this distinction. The award includes $1,000 cash, a plaque, and recognition at the National PTA 125th Anniversary Convention in Maryland. Huge thanks and congratulations to El Rincon PTA Diversity & Equity Committee Co-Chairs VK Shah and Eleanor Lipat-Chesler, and the rest of the committee members!
The school’s many diversity and inclusion efforts include its Diversity & Equity Committee, Inclusion Committee, the El Rincon Celebrates video series, a multicultural resource calendar, cultural assemblies, a book club for adults, diverse book donations to the school library, themed decorations on the front red sliding doors, the Multicultural May month-long celebration, and much more!
The awards honor El Rincon PTA for taking action to improve the education, health, safety and well-being of every child, as well as make sure the perspectives and needs of all communities are heard and represented.
“Taking action every day to improve the education, health, safety and well-being of every child and making sure the perspectives and needs of all communities are heard and represented is more important than ever amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the gun and school safety epidemic, and the fight for racial justice and equity in our country,” said Anna King, president of National PTA.
The Jan Harp Domene Diversity and Inclusion Award is named after past National PTA President (2007-2009) Jan Harp Domene, who was dedicated to ensuring that families of all backgrounds felt welcomed in PTA and their school communities. The award recipients are selected by National PTA’s Diversity, Inclusion & Outreach Committee, which also works to ensure diversity and inclusion in PTA.
