Culver City, the hearth of screenland, ranked near last in safest cities in California, according to a new report from online security review website Safewise.com.
Culver City, which has a population of 39,218 people, ranked no. 220 on the report looking at 230 cities. The city had five violent crimes and 40.8 property crimes per 1,000 residents, according to the report. In 2021, it ranked 214.
To determine the safest cities in the Golden State, SafeWise looked at FBI crime statistics and demographic information for each city in California, according to the report. It used two factors for its safety ratings: property and violent crime.
Oakland ranked 230, dead last in the 2022 safe cities list. Santa Monica ranked no. 224, ahead of Compton at 225 and San Bernardino at 228. Santa Monica has 90,474 residents and had six violent crimes and 42.6 property crimes per 1,000 residents, according to the report. In 2021, Santa Monica ranked 222nd.
"The 'safest' cities rankings are intended to highlight cities with low crime rates and ignite conversation and action around how to make all cities and communities safer," SafeWise said its website.
The statewide safe cities list ranked Danville as no. 1, followed by Rancho Santa Margarita and Moorpark. The top 10 cities also include Yorba Linda, Laguna Niguel, Poway, Mission Viejo, Rancho Palos Verdes and Thousand Oaks.
Palos Verdes was named the safest city in California in 2021. It has 41,513 residents and the median household income is $138,557.
