Main Street Finally Reopens to Auto Traffic

After a lengthy discussion, the Culver City Council this week gave the green light to reopen Main Street to auto traffic.

At its Monday night meeting, the Council voted 3-2 to open Main Street to vehicles on weekdays but close it on Tuesday afternoon for the Farmer's Market and on the weekends.

The dissenting votes were cast by Mayor Daniel Lee and Councilmember Yasmine McMorrin.

In June 202, Main Street was closed to through traffic on "a temporary basis" to encourage outdoor dining during the pandemic. But the launch of the MOVE project last November extended the closure to create a pedestrian-only zone, common in many European cities.

Earlier this year, the city's Bicycle and Pedestrian Committee passed a motion to close Main Street to vehicles on a permanent basis but the Council nixed that idea on Monday night.
