Congresswoman Bass Running for Mayor of Los Angeles Next Year

Karen Bass, Culver City's congressional representative, has announced that she is running mayor of Los Angeles next year.

"With my whole heart, I'm ready," Bass tweeted on Monday afternoon. "Let's do this - together. I'm running for mayor."

In a statement, the Los Angeles native said she'll be focused on series of crises facing the city.

"Our city is facing a public health, safety and economic crisis in homelessness that has evolved into a humanitarian emergency," Bass said. "I've spent my entire life bringing groups of people together in coalitions to solve complex problems and produce concrete change - especially in times of crisis. Los Angeles is my home."

The six-term representative was the former chair of the Congressional Black Caucus. She is one of the more high-profile candidates seeking to succeed Mayor Eric Garcetti. The primary is on June 7.

Before she was elected to Congress in 20210, Bass served as a longtime member of the California state legislature, and rose to become speaker of the California State Assembly.
