Apathy toward Zoning Changes

To the Editor:

I am surprised at my apathy towards the change to R1 zoning that is being proposed by the Culver City Council. Since I skew conservative, I thought about how I arrived at this indifferent attitude.

It started in 2010 when Megan Sahli-Wells became active in city affairs. In November 2010 I wrote a letter to the editor stating my hope that she would never be on the city council. Seventeen months later she won her first term and then was reelected in 2016. This was the first step toward the progressive politics we see today. Currently we have three leftist progressives on the city council, Daniel Lee, Alex Fisch and Yasmine-Imani McMorrin.

When Mr. Lee reneged on a campaign promise, some supporters became angry and wanted to recall him. I wrote another letter saying Mr. Lee won the election fair and square and chastised the supporters that were now regretting their vote.

Now we see Mr. Fisch supporters, like Chrystal Czarnecki Alexander, lamenting their support now that Mr. Fisch is in favor of R1 zoning changes. I will repeat what I said in my previously mentioned May 11, 2018 letter: “What the heck did you expect?”

Here are my other thoughts. Vets Park and Carlson Park have several duplexes, triplexes, and 4-plexes alongside single-family homes. They’re not so bad. Some areas even have small condominium complexes. Some multi-family residences couldn’t possibly be worse than the $2.5 million mega-mansions the planning dept. has approved in the last few years, even though the city passed an anti-mansion measure over 20 years ago. But the past is the past, times have changed and I don’t care.
