Mirroring an alarming countywide trend, Culver City recorded a sharp uptick in the rate of Covid-19 infection and deaths in the past 2 weeks, the Los Angeles County Health officials has announced.
As of press time yesterday, the number of Culver City residents with Covid-19 shot up to 659 cases, a 25% increase in the past 12 days. Deaths related to coronavirus also rose by 3 over the same period and now total 31 locally, health officials said. More than half of the fatalities occurred in nursing homes and assisted living facilities.
County-wide, the total infected with coronavirus stands at 414,185 with 7,740 deaths. On Wednesday, Public Health reported 40 new deaths and 5,987 new cases of Covid-19. Since early November, the average daily cases have increased by 225% and, in the past 10 days, the county have seen recorded over 5,300 cases daily.
Currently, there are 2,439 people hospitalized with Covid-19 in Los Angeles County, surpassing Tuesday's record high of 2,316 people, health officials said. The number of people hospitalized has increased by 94% in the past two weeks.
The County's positivity rate has also increased dramatically, from 3.9% on Nov. 1 to 13.0% yesterday. Heath officials said that Covid-19 cases among healthcare workers and residents in skilled nursing facilities have increased by more than 70% since early November. Cases at schools, both among staff and students, also increased 224% during that period.
Along with the spike in transmission and hospitalizations, the County is also experiencing sharp increases in Covid-19 related deaths. Since November 9, deaths have risen by 92%. This past week, the county has averaged 38 Covid-19 deaths per day, officials said.
"These numbers are devastating," said Barbara Ferrer, PhD, MPH, MEd, Director of Public Health. "We are seeing terrifying increases and numbers in L.A. County that can only be turned around if everyone – businesses and individuals – carefully use the tools we have to slow the spread: wearing a face covering, distancing, staying away from crowds and gatherings, and following all the business protocols to protect workers and customers. Please commit today and through the next few months to being the solution to this terrible pandemic."
The rate of infection in Culver City stands at 1653 per 100,000 population. But it's still lower than the levels at some neighboring cities, including Beverly Hills at 2952, Inglewood at 3775 and the City of Los Angeles 4185.
