Experiencing a marked decline in the rate of infection, Culver City recorded only 38 new cases of coronavirus and no deaths in the past month, the County Health Department has announced.
As of press time Wednesday, the number of local residents with Covid-19 rose to 377 cases, representing only a 10% increase in the past 4 weeks. Deaths related to coronavirus totaled 29 in Culver City. More than half of the deaths occurred in nursing homes and assisted living facilities.
County-wide, the total infected now stands at 256,148 with 6,303 deaths. Ninety-two percent of people who died had underlying health conditions. On Wednesday, Public Health Department reported 1,148 cases of the coronavirus and 31 deaths.
The number of new cases in Los Angeles County has steadily decreased through August and September. Last week, the average daily number of cases was 800, compared with over 2,000 just a month ago. Public Health officials said they will continue to watch this indicator closely because it may be artificially low due to reduced testing numbers seen over the last two weeks.
The test positivity rate has averaged 3% for the past week. Just a month ago, in mid-August, this rate averaged 5%. A decreased test positivity rate is often a sign of reduced community transmission, health officials said.
"Tragically, we are reporting another death in person who was under 29 years old," said Barbara Ferrer, PhD, MPH, MEd, Director of Public Health. "Younger people not only are the majority of individuals infected and infecting others, but also can experience devastating consequences themselves. Nearly 450 Covid-19 deaths have occurred among individuals under the age of 50 years old."
Ferrer also had a message for the residents who will begin observing Rosh Hashanah Friday night. "As you plan your high holidays, please remember that, while we are in this pandemic, the kindest thing we can do for one another is to protect each other from potentially becoming infected with Covid-19," she said. "All worship services for every denomination need to be held outdoors with adherence to distancing, infection control, and face covering requirements. Please be sure to keep each other safe."
The rate of infection in Culver City stands at 946 per 100,000 population. But it's much lower than the 100K levels at some neighboring cities, including Beverly Hills at 1,895, Inglewood at 2,779 and the City of Los Angeles 2,575.
Testing results are available for more than 2,477,000 individuals with 10% of all people testing positive. Currently, there are 804 confirmed cases currently hospitalized and 33% of these people are confirmed cases in the ICU. The downward trend in hospitalizations continues.
