From the Offices of John Nachbar, City Manager and Emergency Services Manager
Culver City and Los Angeles County residents are required to wear a face covering over your nose and mouth if you are working at, shopping at or visiting a grocery store, restaurant or most other types of essential business. Acceptable, reusable face covering options for the general public include:
o Bandanas
o Neck gaiters
o Homemade face coverings
o Scarves
o Tightly woven fabric, such as cotton t-shirts and some types of towels
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) provides instructions on its website to make several types of homemade face coverings, including using a t-shirt and a bandana, without any sewing required. Please visit the CDC's COVID-19 page at http://www.cdc.gov.
A sampling of manufacturers selling face coverings is also available on the City's website at http://www.culvercity.org/coronavirus.
Face Coverings While Exercising
Many people have asked if they need to wear a cloth face covering while exercising (e.g., walking, biking, jogging) outdoors. Here are the short answers:
• Yes, when you are near others (anywhere close to 6 feet) and
• No, when there is no one around you.
Barbara Ferrer, PhD, MPH, MEd, Director of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health suggests, "If you think that for part of the time you're working out, you may be in a busy place where there are other people, then carry [a cloth face covering] with you, and use it at the point that you're going to be in contact with other people."
County Public Health does not recommend wearing a covering over your nose and mouth when doing high intensity training, especially in the heat, because it is harder to breathe. If you're doing any type of high intensity training (e.g., marathon training), try to find a place where you will not be around other
Face Coverings for Children
Children under the age of 2 should NOT wear cloth face coverings. Those between the ages of 2-8 should use them under adult supervision to ensure that the child can breathe safely and to avoid choking or suffocation. Children with breathing problems should not wear a face covering.
