Gold, Silver and Bronze were up for the taking. The 2020 Culver City Invitational Track and Field Meet continued its growing success as 23 local high schools competed on a breaking sunny Saturday afternoon, March 7. Medals were awarded in 58 events at the Culver City High School track and surrounding athletic fields. Girls and boys varsity as well as frosh/soph athletes began the popular invitational at 10:00 a.m. with the 1600-meter events before capping it off in the afternoon with the ever-popular relay events.
Culver City High tracksters won a total of 15 events, seven by the girls' teams and eight by the boys. The girls captured gold in the hurdling, high jump and long jump events as well as four in the relay events. The boys grabbed gold in the hurdles, high jump, pole vault and five in the relay events. The Centaur boys and girls will host El Segundo this Wednesday in a dual meet starting 2:45 p.m.
Sophomore hurdler May Cox started the gold collection for Culver City with a first place finish in the Girls Frosh/Soph 100m Hurdles with at time of 16.95. Hafsa Bariami placed fourth at 19.53. Sophomore hurdler Zaire Waring ran 39.52 to win gold in the Boys Varsity 300m Hurdles by almost three seconds. In the Boys Frosh/Soph High Jump event, Zion Reliford won gold with a jump of 5 feet, 6 inches while William Schultz placed second with a jump of 5 feet.
Culver City frosh/soph girls took three of the top four places in the Long Jump. Freshman Aalirah Perkins leaped 16 feet, 7 inches to take the gold medal. She winning leap was almost two feet longer than sophomore silver winner Nicole Martinez at 14 feet, 9 inches. Abigail Cregor at 12 feet, 11.75 inches finished fourth.
Perkins captured gold again in Girls Frosh/Soph Triple Jump with a leap of 32 feet, 9 inches, over 5 feet longer than second place finisher Giselle Segura of El Segundo. Centaur Abigail Cregor grabbed bronze with a combined leap of 26 feet, 10 inches. Senior Gino Haase thrilled the crowd with by clearing 12 feet, six inches to capture the gold in the Boys Varsity Pole Vault finals. He beat out Dexter Koester of El Segundo at 12 feet and Culver's Eli Horn, who took bronze with a vault of 11 feet, six inches.
In slight upsets, the Culver City girls and boys sprinters failed to win gold in any of their respective individual 100-meter sprints or in the 4x100-meter relays, events usually in their wheelhouse. However, they did manage to clean up in half of the other relay events, beginning with Dialo Drati, Zaire Waring, Collin Dixson and Mekhi Evans-Bey running a combined 3:35.40 to take gold in the Boys Varsity 4x400m event. They edged Santa Monica's foursome by .46 of a second.
The Centaur varsity girls also captured their 4x400m relay event. Kamia Carter, Ari Belcher, Ava Belcher and Alexandria Williams ran a time of 4:12.05 to beat second place El Segundo at 4:16.59. The Culver girls frosh/soph 4x400m relay team also won gold with a time of 4:29.38 by Maya Cox, Hafsa Bariami, Aalirah Perkins and Leah Johnson. Santa Monica took silver with a time of 4:37.40.
Culver City's frosh/soph boys also racked up gold in the 4x400m relay with William Schultz, Jasani Pitts, Tyler Dimant and Jerin Stanton racing to a winning time of 3:44.28 Palisades Charter won silver with 3:35.72. Doubling the pleasure, the Centaur frosh/soph boys also took first in the 4x800 Relay. Aziz (Aces) Ballesteros, Daniel Quintero-Osborne, Kahlin Brooks and Brett Klemes ran a combined time of 9:08.25 to edge Santa Monica at 9:09.02.
Lauren Moodie, Victoria Forgeng, Emi Takara and Sierra Nimnual won the Girls Frosh/Soph 4x800 Relay finals with a time of 10:32.62. Again, Santa Monica finished second at 10:46.95. The girls managed to capture one of the distant relay events in the Girls Varsity DMR 1200-400-800-1600m with a winning time of 14:02.12. Kamia Carter, Beneen Fune, Sofia Aguilar and Vivien Adler teamed up for a 14:02.12 gold time over silver medal winner Highland at 14:09.41.
The Culver boys won gold in the Sprint Medley Relay event (100-100-200-400m) as Christian Miller, Ayinde Bankole, Zaire Waring and Mekhi Evans-Bey locked in a 1:33.33 winning time. Santa Monica took silver with a 1:36.83 time. The Centaur frosh/soph boys captured the last of the team's gold by winning the Distance Medley Relay (1200-400-800-1600m) as Aziz (Aces) Ballesteros, Daniel Quintero-Osborne, Jaylen Montgomery and Shaun Masuda clocked in at 11:46.43, over nine seconds better than second-place North Torrance at 11:55.77.
