Former UCLA Linebacker Kenny Young Returning to Los Angeles
A surprise move and possibly a sign of more shake-ups to come! On Tuesday afternoon, the Los Angeles Rams traded cornerback Marcus Peters to the Baltimore Ravens for second-year linebacker Kenny Young out of UCLA and an undisclosed 2020 draft pick.
The trade comes on the heels of three consecutive losses by the Rams. Peters had played every game for the Rams last season and all six games this season after they had acquired the two-time Pro Bowler from the Kansas City Chiefs before the 2018 season. Peters had a total of five interceptions, two touchdowns and 57 total tackles (42 solo) for the Rams.
Young, a former UCLA Bruin linebacker, is 23-years old and under contract at the minimum salary through the 2021 season. Young started in three of the 16 games he played for the Ravens in 2018 and started in three of five games this season. He registered 51 solo tackles of 64 combined tackles, 13 tackles for loss and nine quarterback hits for the Ravens.
Young played four years for the Bruins, was selected first-team All-PAC 12 in 2017 when he led the team with 110 tackles. He was an honorable mention on the All-PAC 12 Academic team in 2017 and finished 13th in tackles on the all-time school list. Young was named to the Second Team All-PAC 12 Conference in 2016 and was also on the 2016 UCLA debate team.
The Peters trade comes one day after the Rams put starting cornerback, Aqip Talib, on the injured reserve list due to a rib injury suffered in the team's 20-7 defeat to the San Francisco 49ers this past Sunday at the L.A. Memorial Coliseum. Peters is seeking a long-term contract once he becomes a free-agent after the 2019 season.
Peters, who came to Rams as being one of the best cornerbacks in the league, is on a fifth year option paying him $9 million for this season. But the Rams defense struggled in 2018 and so far this season, partially due to Peters having failed to live up to the reputation he earned with the Chiefs.
On Tuesday, the Rams also traded a 2021 draft pick to the Cleveland Browns for offensive guard and center, Austin Corbett as the team seeks to shore up its offensive front line. The trade is a result of the Rams losing offensive left guard Joe Noteboom during Sunday's loss to the Niners. Noteboom suffered a torn ACL and MCL, effectively ending his season. Corbett was the 33rd overall and first pick of the second round during the 2018 NFL Draft.
