Twilight on the Pier Returns in August

Formerly known as the Twilight Dance Series, now dubbed "Twilight on the Pier," the free concerts will return to the Santa Monica Pier in late August. This will be the 35th consecutive year of the series.

The popular weeknight free concerts on the Pier became too popular in 2017 and were nearly halted for good. A singer named Khalid had been booked before he became a sensation. A crowd estimated at 25,000 showed up to hear him. Normally, the concert series had been bringing in no more than 10,000 attendees. The city's police and fire departments became concerned about public safety and residents were infuriated by the huge mass of out-of-towners.

This year, the series will start later in the summer, on August 21, and proceed for the following 5 Wednesday nights, ending September 25. The series is billed as reflecting "both our diverse audience and the many cultures throughout Southern California that influence the art and music that we enjoy every day." This year, the events will include three stages with not only music, but also comedy acts and "interactive activations." A wine and beer garden will be involved. (What can go wrong?)

One can choose to attend Wednesdays that may feature the Latin Wave, Middle East Beats, Island Tides, or Aussie Splash. Events begin at 7 and end at 10 (supposedly).
