Alvin T Reif, husband of Dottie Reif, passed away June 15, 2019 after a long battle with COPD and dementia. He had been a patient at Bella Vista Transitional Care Center in SLO for the past nine months. Al was born in Pittsburg Pennsylvania and moved when he was 5 years old to Culver City area where he went to school and college in southern Calif. During his college years, he was awarded several trophies for track and field. After college, he joined the US Airforce. He was discharged after four years of service, then he began his teaching career as a Special Ed teacher at the Culver City United School District. During this time, he was asked if he could do a “one year” principal-teacher of children of armed forces stationed in London England. It was an honor to do so.
Al has two children from his first marriage, Jerry and Gina Reif. His wife passed away and soon after, his daughter passed, leaving a three year old granddaughter Lauren. Lauren has given Al two great-grandchildren, a son and a daughter. Jerry also gave Al two grandchildren, a son and a daughter. Al loved to ski, and did ski patrol for many years. He loved to travel in his motor home. He took his two young grandchildren to every State in the union, and to every state park in our country. After Al decided to retire, he and Dottie met at Madonna Inn dancing. Al was the BEST dancer on the floor 110 Dottie and Al married a few months later, July of 1994.
Dottie is from the Jardine and Armande ranching families. Dottie raised cattle and Arabian horses for 60 years, and Al took to the country life, like ducks take to water. After they married, they purchased ten acres in the Estrella area. Al built, from bare ground, barns and large pens for Dottie’s Arabian horses. He was truly a CITY DUDE gone country. He loved Dottie’s children like his own, and has left a huge loss in our family.
