The UCLA softball team will be looking to move into the 30 win category this weekend when the Bruins play the University of California on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. UCLA is the No. 1 team in the nation and they come into the weekend games with a record of 29-1.
This season the Bruins appear to have no weaknesses. Their pitching is outstanding, their hitting is excellent and their defense is very good. The knock on the Bruins the last few years is that have they had only one solid reliable pitcher. This year they have one great pitcher in junior Rachel Garcia and two really good pitchers in freshman Megan Faraimo and sophomore Holly Azevedo.
Garcia is 13-0, Azevedo is 7-0 and Faraimo is 9-1. Will this group of pitchers be good enough to win the NCAA championship, only time will tell? When Garcia is not pitching she plays first base and she is also one of the best hitters on the team. She is batting .349 with six home runs.
Some of the other top hitters on the team are shortstop Briana Perez. Perez is batting .417, has 43, scored 38 runs and she has stolen 11 bases in 11 tries. She also leads the team with 103 at bats. Freshman Kelli Godin is batting .517, senior Taylor Pack is batting .389 with five home runs and sophomore Aaliyah Jordan is hitting .384 with four home runs.
Joining the hit parade for the Bruins is their leading home run and runs batted in hitter, Bubba Nickles. She has nine home runs and 34 runs batted in and she is batting .354. Sophomore Kinsley Washington, the daughter of former UCLA and Dallas Cowboys safety James Washington is batting .304.
On Friday the game will start at 5 p.m. Saturday’s game will begin at 7 p.m. and Sunday’s contest will start at 1 p.m.
