Centaurs Head for Big Season

Hopes are High after Big Showing in Summer Games

The Culver City High School football team opened their fall camp this week and will train for three days running and conditioning before they "put on the pads" and combat their fellow Centaurs in practice soon.

The Centaurs had an amazing summer. some who say that it was the best in two decades.

Culver opened the summer "passing league" season with two big tournament championships, and then in the prestigious Bonita passing tournament, they finished second among 30 top-ranked teams.

To prove their wealth of talent, Culver has four seniors and one junior who have been offered Division 1 scholarships. They are seniors Jamal Glaspie, Kevin McGuire, Dominick Tatum, and Allen Smith, and junior Khary Crump.

There are several other senior players that Culver Head Football Coach Jahmal Wright and his staff feel may also garner scholarship consideration.

Scouts have told the Centaurs that they are interested in linebacker Cortez Wright, slot Tyler Luckett, corner Andrew Brown, and offensive linemen Kofi Karikari and Amir Hodge.

There are a few juniors who scouts will most likely be interested in after this season. They are receivers Tanner Duve and Chris Miller, who performed well this summer, offensive linemen David Narranjo and Blake Kneebone, and linebacker Keaton Asma.

Perhaps the biggest question this year: Who will be the starting quarterback for the Cents?

Sophomore Zevi Eckhaus seemed to fare best in the summer passing tourneys. But he's got stiff competition from talented junior QB Nick Lucero and senior Tee Barnes.

Culver's game-schedule will also be tougher. Added to the mix will be perennial Bay League champions Palos Verdes, hard-hitting Warren High of Downey, and Peninsula.

All games start at 7 p.m.
