The No. 2 UCLA softball team will start the NCAA Tournament on Friday at home when they play Sacramento State inside Easton Stadium at 8 p.m. in the Los Angeles Regional. The Bruins are 50-4 overall and they placed second in the Pac-12 behind No. 1 Oregon with a 20-4 record.
The Bruins are coming off of a tough three game series last weekend against Arizona State. They loss the first game of the series 3-0 but they rebounded and won the last two games 5-1 and 2-1. The 2-1 victory last Saturday lasted nine innings.
"This team is on a roll and it feels awesome," said senior second baseman Kylee Perez who plays alongside her sister Briana the shortstop. "We are really together on and off the field this year. We love playing together and I really love playing with my sister. I wish I could play a few more years at UCLA with my sister but that's not possible."
The Bruins have seven players batting over .300. At the plate they are led by red-shirt freshman Aaliyah Jordan at .444, Bubba Nickles at .390, Kylee Perez at .388, Briana Perez at .387, Rachel Garcia at .355, Kinsley Washington is batting .330. and Taylor Pack is batting .322.
The top pitchers this year are Garcia who has a record of 21-2, Holly Azevdo is 15-0, Selina Ta'amilo is 10-2 and Johanna Graver is 4-0.
"I think we are a chill team," said Kylee Perez. "We like to have fun and keep things loose. When we keep things loose that's when we play our best."
The UCLA Women's Beach Volleyball team won the National Championship two weeks ago when they beat Florida 3-1. The Bruins set a NCAA record with 40 wins this season. They ended the season 40-4 and the UCLA women's gymnastics team won the National Championship last month so it appears the Bruin women are having a great spring.
