Special Election April 3 for 54th Assembly District
Dr. Tepring Piquado, scientist, educator, and Democratic candidate for Assembly, announced today that she has been endorsed by Congressman Jerry McNerney (D-Stockton) in her bid for California Assembly District 54 in the special election on April 3rd.
The seat was vacated when Assemblymember Ridley-Thomas announced his resignation due to health reasons.
Congressman McNerney (D-Stockton) represents California's 9th Congressional District and serves on the House Committee on Energy and Commerce and the House Committee on Space, Science, and Technology. He was inspired to run for office after his son joined the Air Force shortly after 9/11. Congressman McNerney authored legislation that passed with bipartisan support that ensured the Veteran's Administration was equipped to treat traumatic brain injuries, the signature injury of the Iraq War. Prior to elected office, he led a startup responsible for manufacturing wind turbines. He holds a Ph.D. in Mathematics.
"Dr. Tepring Piquado will bring to the Assembly a much-need perspective that promotes evidence-based policy making. She will put people before politics, stand up for our veterans and fight for working families. I'm proud to support Dr. Piquado," said Congressman Jerry McNerney.
Dr. Tepring Piquado is a scientist and educator who is running for State Assembly. As a middle and high school teacher, she taught AP Computer Science, Physical Science, and Mathematics. As a scientist, she's worked on national efforts to improve the lives of first responders, veterans suffering from traumatic brain injuries, and mental health conditions. She has received over $1 million in grants from the Department of Defense, the American Heart Association, and the US Army. In 2013, she was recognized by the California State Senate where she worked in Senate Human Services to expand access to services for low-income communities and policies to combat climate change.
"I am honored to receive Congressman McNerney endorsement. I respect him and appreciate that he also recognizes we need leaders who are guided by facts and research when making decisions. That's what I've done throughout my career as a scientist and what I'll continue to do in the Assembly," said Dr. Tepring Piquado.
Tepring has dedicated her life to defending equality, diversity, and inclusion. Her career demonstrates this commitment and passion from her work as co-chair of RAND Corporation's Diversity and Inclusion Forum (ensuring more women, African-American, Asian and Latino professionals have opportunities to succeed), as a Board member of SACNAS (advancing Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in science) and as a volunteer supporting young women and people of color pursue their education.
