Make Culver City Ferret Friendly

I am a resident of Culver City and founder of Angel City Ferret Club. This past week we have requested Culver City City Council to become a Ferret Friendly City; publicly supporting the legalization effort here in California.

Since 1988 ferret enthusiast have been trying to change the 1933 law banning domestic ferrets. Supporters have tried every conceivable path towards legalization; legislative, regulative, in the courts and even a ballot initiative. The plain fact is that we the people don’t have enough political power to change this unjust law at a State level (even though we are still trying).

Ferret ownership should not be a misdemeanor in California, especially when they are legal in 48 states. When all 50 states wildlife agencies were surveyed in 2010, not one reported having a known feral ferret problem. As many people know, ferrets are also, a fun, safe and good alternative to cats or dogs.

Recently, La Mesa City Council ruled to support the ferret legalization movement in California with a 5-0 vote. We hope to build off of this momentum and gain more support from other cities throughout California. The issue was covered by The San Diego Reader & San Diego Union-Tribune.

I would greatly appreciate if your paper would consider an article on the issue. I am more than happy to assist in anyway.

Thank you for your time,

Megan Mitchell

CONTINUING COMMENT - SINCE CALIFORNIA IS AFRAID OF FERRETS GETTING LOOSE AND DISRUPTING THE WILDLIFE - HAVING MANDATORY SPAY/CASTRATION/MICROCHIP WOULD HELP WITH THE PROBLEM. NOW THAT CC IS DOING THE SAME WITH DOGS AND CATS AND CHARGING A STIFF FINE IF THEY ARE NOT HOPEFULLY PEOPLE WILL TAKE CARE OF THEIR PETS AND GET THESE THINGS DONE. IF A FERRET WERE TO GET LOOSE WITH THE MICROCHIP WE COULD TRACE THE OWNER AND CHARGE A FINE LIKE THEY DO WITH D&C UNLESS AN MAJOR EARTHQUAKE, ETC. HAPPENS

I WORKED FOR A VETERINARIAN FOR MANY YEARS THAT DID SPAY AND CASTRATE FERRETS AMONG OTHER ANIMALS. WE ALSO ALLOWED FERRETS ANONYMOUS MEETINGS IN OUR HOSPITAL ONCE A MONTH. AS THE LAW STATED AT THAT TIME WE DID NOT KEEP THE FERRETS OVERNIGHT AT THE ANIMAL HOSPITAL AFTER SURGERY. I PERSONALLY LOVE FERRETS, NEVER SAW A MEAN ONE. WHAT I WOULD DO IS TO MAKE FERRETS LEGAL IN CULVER CITY IS TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY ARE SPAYED/CASTRATED AND ARE MICROCHIPPED .
