The Buss family feud has came to an end with Jeanie officially taking control of the Lakers and brother Jim resigning as co-trustee. Jim Buss’ seat on the Board has gone to younger sister Janie, an ally of Jeanie in the recent family drama.
Previously Janie had warned that Buss family members would become a minority if Jim and brother Johnny were allowed to sell their shares to friends who could regularly out-vote Jeanie. With the recent development a Los Angeles Superior Court hearing scheduled for May 15 has been cancelled.
Jim’s four years as the owner presiding over a series of unsuccessful roster changes which left the Lakers far out of playoff contention has come to an end.
Now that Jeanie is the boss it remains to be seen how soon Magic Johnson and new General Manager Rob Pelinka can lift the Lakers into playoff contention following a five-year absence. A new NBA rule significantly favoring free agents who stay with their teams will make it more difficult than it would have been a couple of years ago.
