WLA College Offers Free Summer Enrichment Program

West Los Angeles College is offering great programs for children and youth this summer including a new Career Discovery Academy that is COMPLETELY FREE. The free Academy is for youth entering grades 8 through 12 in Fall 2016. Sessions are two or three weeks long and include Computer Science / Robotics, Science, Health Care, Business / Entrepreneurism, Film Production, and Preparing for that First Job. There is also a Math / English / Study Skills Boot Camp and Saturday-only computer courses. Enrollment is now open and session start dates are June 13, June 27, July 11, and July 25. Youth may enroll in more than one session. Participants should plan to attend a brief orientation session one evening between May 16 and June 7. More information is available at http://www.WLAC.edu/High-School/Index.aspx.

For graduating high school seniors and those who have left high school in the last year or two, West offers a Summer Bridge program to facilitate a successful transition into college. It includes an English class and a Personal Development class focusing on career exploration, selecting a major, and academic success. Participants will earn credit toward an Associate degree and university transfer requirements. Coaching to succeed in college-level and upper division math will also be provided. "In addition to the academics," explained program director Casey Hunter, "these students also get really familiar with the college and are able to sign up for accelerated tracks, and academic and financial support programs. Plus, they are guaranteed enrollment in a pre-selected 12 units for the Fall. And, the students make friends and connect with professors and staff which is nice when you're starting at a new place." Information on this program can also be found at http://www.WLAC.edu/High-School/Index.aspx.

"Now with healthier levels of funding, the college is again able to serve a broader section of our community," said WLAC's Interim President Robert Sprague. "These programs for children and youth are important to ensuring that more young people are college-ready and college-comfortable by the time they complete high school. The programs not only provide enrichment and / or skills strengthening, they also help youth understand the many resources available at West such as scholarships and financial aid, special cohort groups, free tutoring, university transfer programs and more."

For the Kindergarten through 8th grade set, fee-based classes and camps are available through Westside Extension – including art, Spanish, robotics and engineering, coding and video game design, seven different sports, cheerleading and dance, aquatics, medicine, tools for school, and MEGA Camp (academics + field trips).
