WLA Baseball To Highlight Autism Awareness On Saturday

Baseball is not the only important thing that is going on at West Los Angeles Community College. The coaching staff is trying to teach young men life lessons along with trying to improve a struggling baseball program and that's where Autism awareness comes into the picture.

Before during and after the game at 1 p.m. this Saturday against Antelope Valley College there will be a lot of activities for all ages.

"We want to make sure our players realize how fortunate they are just to be able to walk and talk on a normal level," said West Los Angeles assistant coach Carlos Rojas.

"We expect a big crowd on Saturday and there will be a lot of activities for the kids like face painting and we also expect an appearance by Hiccups the Clown. There will be information booths that we give out information about Autism and other diseases that affect all communities."

The 10-17 Wildcats are a program on the rise but they realize there is plenty of work to do to become an elite program. "We want to get support for the baseball program because this ship is turning around," said Rojas.

The Wildcats have three more home games to play and seven more games overall so they're trying to end the season on a high note.

"We are asking our players to dig deep and try to finish the season strong but our energy level has to be better but the overall direction of the program is tremendous," said Rojas.

Another assistant coach, Roger Hill, is also happy with the direction of the program but he realizes there is work to do. "This team is learning everyday but the retention has to be better and they have to maintain focus. To play this game you have to make adjustments. If they come back or if they leave this school I want them to feel good about themselves. I also tell them it's not how you start it's how you finish the season."

The Wildcats' next home game after Saturday will be against Citrus on Thursday April 21 and their last home game of the season will be Thursday April 28 against Glendale. Both games will start at 2:30 p.m.
