CCHS Student Recognized for Outstanding Service, Achievement

Mayor Micheal O'Leary and Culver City Fire Chief David White recognized CCHS Student Kyle Hiroto Lorrin on Tuesday, April 5 for Outstanding Community Service for his actions in response to an alarm in the home of a neighbor who was away.

Unsure of the nature of the alarm, Kyle responded to his neighbor's home with equipment suitable to handle a fire or burglary. Discovering a fire upon entry, Kyle effected the evacuation of the owner's elderly dog-sitter and her husband and grandchildren, as well as the owner's dog.

Kyle proceeded to calm the victims, including the frightened Labradoodle, and treated for shock as the CCFD quickly arrived on the scene; and then assisted the CCFD with contacting the owner and keeping them apprised of the situation.

Mayor O'Leary further recognized Kyle for representing Culver City in his appointment to the United States Air Force Academy class of 2020 (Colorado Springs, Colorado), to commence this June.

Appointment to the military service academies (all of which provide full tuition in undergraduate studies, room and board, as well as commission as an officer in the services) requires a nomination from the candidate's Congressional Representative, Senator, or the Vice President of the United States.

Obtaining the highly sought nomination is a competitive process, taking into consideration the candidate's academic, community service, and athletic record as a whole.

Kyle brought honor to Culver City in winning both the state-wide nomination from US Senator Dianne Feinstein to the US Air Force Academy and the district nomination from US Representative Karen Bass to both the US Air Force Academy and US Naval Academy (Annapolis, Maryland).

Kyle intends to pursue a degree in aeronautical engineering.
