"Claybourne Park" Coming To Kentwood

Kentwood Players will present "Clybourne Park" by Bruce Norris from May 13 through June 18 on Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm and Sundays at 2 pm at the Westchester Playhouse, 8301 Hindry Avenue in Westchester.

The production is directed by George L. Rametta and produced by Lauren A. Jarvis by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service. Inc. The cast features (in alphabetical order) Pauline Bugembe, Harold Dershimer, Jeremy Patrick Hamilton, Jen Kerner, Matt Landig, Damon Rutledge, and Andrea Stradling.

"Clybourne Park" was written as a companion piece to "A Raisin in the Sun," an audience favorite that was produced by Kentwood Players at the Westchester Playhouse from January 8 to February 13.

"Clybourne Park" is a funny and ferociously smart play that won the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the 2012 Tony Award for Best Play. Set in Chicago, the play explodes in two biting and satiric acts, 50 years apart.

Act I takes place in 1959 (as did "A Raisin in the Sun") as nervous white community leaders anxiously try to stop the sale of a middle-class home to a black family. Act II jumps to 2009, in the same house, as the now predominantly African-American neighborhood battles to hold its ground in the face of urban renewal by a Caucasian couple. Each of the seven cast members plays different characters in both acts.

Tickets are $20 with a $2 discount for seniors and students. To purchase tickets, please call (310) 645-5156 during box office hours, Wednesday through Saturday from 4 pm to 7. You may also purchase tickets online at http://www.kentwoodplayers.org. For group ticket sales of 10 or more, please call the box office for group rates.

Please note this topical, insightful, and relevant play about racial discord, civic engagement, and foibles of miscommunication contains adult situations and language, and is not recommended for children. Those under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult in the theater.
