Hall of Fame manager and MLB executive Joe Torre will receive the Allan H. “Bud” Selig Executive Leadership Award at the 13th annual Professional Baseball Scouts Foundation’s “In the Spirit of the Game” Fundraiser Saturday, Jan. 16, 2016 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
Selig, the retired Major League Baseball Commissioner, will present the award.
Others to be honored at the prestigious event include: popular television talk show host Larry King, who will receive special recognition for his efforts on behalf of the game and the Professional Baseball Scouts Foundation; former Dodgers base-stealing wizard Maury Wills, Player Lifetime Achievement Award; New York Mets manager Terry Collins, the Tommy Lasorda Managerial Achievement Award; Andre Dawson, the Scout’s Dream Award for Outstanding Achievement in Baseball History; and event founder Dennis Gilbert, the Dave Winfield Humanitarian Award.
In the past 12 years, many of Major League Baseball’s current and former stars have been among the 1,500 guests attending the affair to assist those scouts who have given so much back to the game. The foundation was started and continues to be led by Gilbert, who has helped raise over $1.6 million for the scouts.
MLB's Chief Baseball Officer, Torre oversees areas that include Major League Operations, On-Field Operations, On-Field Discipline and Umpiring. Since December 2009, he has served on the Special Committee for On-Field Matters. He also was a key part of the sub-committee on the expansion of instant replay for the 2014 season.
Torre was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY, in 2014.
