The USC football team is not the only athletic squad capturing headlines this fall. The women’s volleyball team is 10-0 and ranked number three in some of the recent polls. Led by senior outside hitter Samantha Bricio the Trojans have won 29 straight sets.
“I like this team,” said a happy USC coach Mick Haley after they beat Pepperdine 3-0 last week. “We are playing well and I think Bricio is amazing. It’s nice to keep getting better and win games at the same time.” Although they lost some key players from last years’ team the Trojans appear to have better chemistry in 2015.
“I think this team is amazing,” said Bricio last week after USC won its own invitational. “We are really connecting well together. I am really excited.”
She should be excited. She was named the Offensive Player of the Week for the third straight time last week. She is only the second player in league history to earn that honor. In her last four games she has recorded 67 kills while leading the Trojans to 29 straight winning sets.
“She worked hard all summer,” said Haley about Bricio. “It’s a lot of fun watching a player like Samantha grow over the years. She was a 17-year-girl from Mexico who spoke very little English. Now she’s playing great volleyball and telling everybody what to do.”
The Trojans are on the road now at the Oklahoma Invitational. They played Oklahoma on Thursday and will face Maryland next. On Wednesday, September 23 they travel to UCLA for a 7:30 p.m. match against the 14th ranked Bruins.
