The Culver-City High girls basketball team captured first-place in the inaugural Culver City / St. Mary's Tip-Off Classic on Saturday night, November 29 as they held off a strong fourth quarter rally by View Park High in the tournament final, 56-47. Third place went to Leuzinger High as they squeaked by St. Genevieve High 63-60 in a lively seesaw battle preceding the championship game at Del Goodyear Gymnasium.
Kailey Tooke led the Centaurs with 14 points including a quick nine points in the first quarter as the Culver girls jumped out to 16-5 lead. Megan Yoon added 13 points including converting the team's two three-point baskets. Gwen Machado and Billie Crichton scored five points each. Lindsey Tanita, Kate Suyetsugu and Morgan Williams tallied four each while Katie Lin added three free-thows.
The Centaurs won all five of their games during the six-day tournament that featured 12 local high schools including Friday's fourth round victory over St. Genevieve, 61-36. Tooke led all scorers with 19 points while Lin knocked in four three-pointers for 12 points. Also scoring: Crichton with nine, Machado added seven, Suyetsugu and Alex Arancibia had four each. Yoon, Tanita and Morgan Williams scored three, two and one respectively.
