Culver's Cardenes Named Woman Of The Year

NAPW has honored Arlette Cardenes , Music Director of the Culver City Chamber Orchestra, as a 2014 Professional Woman of the Year.

She is recognized with this prestigious distinction for leadership in music education. As the largest networking organization of professional women in the country the National Association of Professional Women is a powerfully vibrant networking community with over 600,000 members and nearly 300 Local Chapters.

"My parents involved music in our upbringing," says Ms. Cardenes. "I attended the symphony as a child."

When she was young, Ms. Cardenes and her siblings were encouraged to pick an instrument to play. She chose the cello and has been playing it ever since. Ms. Cardenes remained passionate about music and went on to get a Master of Arts in Cello Performance from the University of Michigan. In addition to performing, Ms. Cardenes teaches cello to children and and co-founded the Culver City Chamber Orchestra in 1997.

As Music Director of CCCO, Ms. Cardenes has brought together a group of immensely talented musicians, including renowned soloists from all over the United States and local professional and amateur players. Realizing that music education for children in the community was greatly lacking, Ms. Cardenes and her staff have been giving students the opportunity to play with and learn from these highly skilled musicians. Recently, the CCCO held a performance featuring children ages 9, 10, 11 and 18 performing with the group.

"We talk to teachers and ask them to recommend outstanding student musicians and ask them to perform with us," says Ms. Cardenes. "This was done when I was a child and now we are recreating these opportunities for kids today." Looking toward the future, Ms. Cardenes plans to continue to nurture budding musicians, offer more student programs and expand the Culver City Chamber Orchestra.
