October 13, 1930 - August 30, 2014
Husband of Alma . . . Father of Ronald Dean, James Albert, and Tony Patrick . . . Grandfather of Ron Ryan, Matthew, Nathan, and Ariella.
Ronald's father Jim was born in Culver City in 1909 before the city was even established. He attended Culver Grammar School in 1916 and worked at MGM Studios as a light man from 1929 to 1959. Ronald's mother, Kathy, was a waitress at Petrelli's in the 1930's.
Ronald attended Culver Grammar School in 1937 and was a Hamilton High graduate in 1949 where he led their basketball team to the City Championship. He was a decorated Korean War veteran and married Alma (who was a class of 1950 graduate of Venice high school) in 1955. That year he started working at AT&T and spent 30 years there, retiring in 1985. He was a life member of American Legion Post 46.
After retirement he spent the following years enjoying his kids play hockey at the Culver City Ice Rink and baseball at the CCHS and American Legion baseball fields. Ronald's sons all went to Culver Jr. and Sr. High Schools and his grandson, Nathan, also went to Culver Grammar School (now called Linwood E. Howe). Ronald had a special bond with his grandkids, watching reruns of Get Smart that he had watched the generation before with his own children.
When Ronald was born his parents lived on Jackson Ave. His mother went into labor and didn't quite make it into Los Angeles hospital as he was born on the steps of the hospital. On August 30, Ronald died peacefully in his home on Jackson Ave. on the same block where he grew up. He had a terrific sense of humor and was considered by friends and family to be the most honest person they had ever known. He will be missed.
