Summer Music Festival Returns

Boulevard Music presents 6 free concerts on Thursday evenings at 7pm from July 10 through August 14 in the palm-lined courtyard of Culver City City Hall.

Curated by producer Gary Mandell, Culver City’s Boulevard Music Summer Festival offers something for everyone: Cajun, world music, country, Brazilian, Charanga, swing and more. Escape to downtown Culver City, featuring a wonderful mix of historic buildings, boutiques, theaters, galleries, and unique restaurants all within walking distance.

What's coming up:

• July 10- Cajun/Zydeco from Andre Thierry and Zydeco Magic

Traditional Zydeco is merged with hip-hop, bluez, jazz and rock, described by Michael Tisserand as combining 'youthful vigor with a mature appreciation for inherited tradition'. In 2008, Thierry and Zydeco Magic were awarded 'Best Zydeco Group' by the San Francisco Bay area, home to some of the world's best blues musicians.

• July 17- World Music from Jessica Fichot plus Los Pinguos' Argentinian rock

L.A. based songwriter and accordionist takes the listener on a journey out of the French tradition into the lands of gypsy jazz and Chinese swing. She has performed in venues internationally backed by her fiery band and armed with her multilingual vocals.

Los Pinguos perform a mixture of salsa, flamenco, reggae and rumba. They feature on three of the famous Putumayo World Music compilation albums and have performed worldwide, including the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland.

• July 24- Surf music hits of the Beach Boys/Jan and Dean from Surf City

Surf City celebrate the 50th Anniversary of California’s historic group the Beach Boys in a perfect Summer concert setting. Featuring Matt Jardine on percussion, Don Raymond on guitar, Phil Bardowell on bass, Michael Chanslor on keyboards and Todd Tatum on drums.

• July 31- Hot Bluegrass from the John Jorgenson Bluegrass Band

Multiple Grammy winner John Jorgenson presents the Bluegrass Band, featuring three legendary musicians: Herb Pedersen, Jon Randall and Mark Fain. Jorgenson has collaborated with Bob Dylan, Earl Scruggs, and Elton John to name a few. One of the elite Gypsy Jazz players in the world, Jorgenson portrayed Django Reinhardt in the Hollywood feature film Head in the Clouds.

• August 7- Music from Katia Moraes & Brazilian Hearts plus Charanga from Orquesta Charangoa

Moraes' electrifying performance and the band's tropical rhythms will turn City Hall into a Samba dance experience like you've never seen before. Beginning her career in Rio de Janeiro in the 80s with her band 'O Espirito da Coisa', Moraes has since performed and recorded with top Brazilian acts such as Grammy nominee 'Latin Project'.

Orquesta Charangoa, is thriving force in Los Angeles' vibrant Latin music scene. Travelling to Cuba to study flute with Richard Egues, composer of Cuba’s most popular cha cha cha El Bodeguero, Roberts returned home brimming with inspiration- the result being the creation of L.A’s most authentic Cuban music group.

• August 14- A mix of folk/bluegrass/swing/nostalgia from the Dustbowl Revival

The Dustbowl Revival's folk-blues orchestra merges old-school gypsy rhythms with bluegrass, gospel and 1930’s swing. Known for their raucous dance-inducing live sets, the Dustbowl Revival plays original front porch rock n’ roll. This high-energy music is written by 24 year old Zach Lupetin, who envisioned a kind of roots supergroup. The goal? To make people feel good of course!
