By defeating Inglewood and Santa Monica, their principal challengers for the Ocean League championship, Culver is in position to claim first place.
However, if Culver loses this week to Morningside it would be tied for first place since Santa Monica plays Inglewood Friday night and one of them will win. Morningside, also with just one league loss, would share first place too, but it's final league game will be against Inglewood.
ST. MONICA
A 33-27 loss to St. Anthony left the Mariners with a 1-2 league record. The Mariners lost even though they scored 20 points in the second quarter.
St. Monica will have a bye this weekend before completing its regular season schedule against Salesian.
BRENTWOOD
In the final home game of Patrick Brown's 35-year reign as the Eagles' football coach Brentwood overcame a 14-0 deficit to defeat Windward, 16-14.
"We won on a safety. Last season we also defeated Windward on a safety, 9-7," said Brown.
"It was quite a day. Former players arrived from all over the country and there was a brief ceremony."
Brentwood will conclude its regular season schedule with two road games. This Saturday at 1 pm Brentwood will oppose Marshall in Pasadena.
The Eagles are in contention for a CIF playoff berth but would have to avoid another loss.
WINDWARD
Trying to avoid a loss to Brentwood, Windward tried a 37-yard field goal with seven seconds remaining but the kick was short.
Windward will take a 6-2 record into its home game against Paraclete Saturday at 2 pm.
VENICE
The Gondoliers won at Palisades, 34-7 but allowed an opponent to score for the first time in three games.
Venice (6-2) has a five-game winning streak and will play at Fairfax Friday night.
