New Culver Quarterback Makes An Impression

It’s not like it used to be in high school football, when kids from a neighborhood took on kids from another neighborhood.

Through the years competition intensified, rules changed and parents began looking for greater opportunities for their sons.

Transferring became the way to go for many and the CIF loosened its rules to halt the practice. The practice of looking elsewhere, seeing which school might need someone at your position became prevelant.

Last season the quarterback at Culver City High was a transfer. So was the quarterback at Ocean League rival Santa Monica.

This season the quarterback at Culver City will be another transfer, 6-foot-5 David Handler, formerly of Palisades.

In the Pierce College passing tournament last week Handler took firm grip on the position.

He threw three touchdown passes in a 28-23 loss to Thousand Oaks. He threw two more in a 41-13 win over Sotomayer.

Then he threw five more in a championship round 35-28 win over Nordhoff.

Handler will be the tallest quarterback in Centaur history. He is not considered an outstanding runner but he has several outstanding receivers including Donnie Davis, Lonnie Walker and Miles Worthington.

Culver, which lost the championship game to Hart, 53-18, was without three key players. Stanley Norman was competing in the state track meet. Brandon Hasson and Kevin Beechan couldn’t play either.

Todd Goodwin, Deron Brown and Jerico Flowers had interceptions.

‘I saw some good things and some things we need to work on,’ said coach Jahmal Wright.

The Centaurs will begin their season Sept. 13 at Peninsula. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 pm.
