After last month’s failure of the City Council to seat the newly formed Financial Advisory Committee, staff appears to have miscued the seating of the newly appointed Fiesta La Ballona Committee
In what should have been the first meeting of the newly appointed Fiesta La Ballona Committee Tuesday’s meeting was abruptly cancelled after staff failed to post the agenda 72 hours in advance and according one informed source had not yet notified the newly appointed members of the meeting.
Under California Law the Brown Act requires public meetings be noticed 72 hours in advance. This includes the City Council and all commissions and official committees in the city.
Email notices went out on Monday advising participants and interested residents of the Tuesday meeting.
Obviously realizing the error, Parks and Recreation Supervisor Dan Jassim emailed the cancellation notice approximately two hours before the meeting was to begin.
Jassim stated in his notice of cancellation, “…On February 25, 2013, the City Council appointed six members to a newly created, City Council appointed Fiesta La Ballona Committee. Pursuant to the creation of the new Committee and the appointment of its inaugural members, staff will begin working with the Committee to finalize preparations for the 2013 Fiesta La Ballona.”
He went on to thank the past committee members for their service saying, “The new Committee will begin its work shortly. Those interested in continuing their volunteer efforts in preparing for and presenting the 2013 Fiesta La Ballona are welcome to attend the first meeting of the new Committee as volunteers and their skills and time will remain a welcomed and necessary part of this great Culver City tradition.”
No date was given for the next meeting which will include the seating of the new committee. Two of the six members were part of the Fiesta Committee last year, Marcus Tiggs and Ronnie Jayne. The both have served in the past as city commissioners.
Under the leadership of Chairman Mike Cohen, last year’s Fiesta was one of the most successful with estimates of the highest attendance and top revenue producing Fiesta in recent years. The 2013 Fiesta La Ballona is scheduled to be held on August 23-25 in Veterans Park.
