The 20th victory was one of the toughest, but the Culver City High girls basketball team emerged with a 33-31 win at Hawthorne Tuesday night.
Taylor Tanita’s shot with five seconds left kept Culver undefeated in nine Ocean League games and gave Hawthorne a 6-3 league record.
Coach Julian Anderson’s team has a 20-5 record as it heads into a game against Beverly Hills that will conclude the regular season.
Then the CIF playoffs will begin.
Anderson said the Centaurs are working on developing a killer instinct.
“We’re trying to be relentless,” he said. “When a team comes into our gym they should know they’re in our house and they have to play at our speed.”
As the Centaur victories have mounted respect has grown among rival coaches.
“They have a great work ethic,” said Santa Monica High coach Marisa Silvestri. “They outworked us, a tribute to their players and coaching staff.”
The Culver boy’s team earned its second Ocean League victory of the season (sixth overall) by defeating host Hawthorne Tuesday, 78-71.
With the high point total the Centaurs were able to play at their preferred fast tempo.
