Valentine's Day Dining

Billingsley's Prime Rib & Steakhouse

Billingsley's Prime Rib & Steakhouse, established by the family of "Leave It To Beaver" Mom herself, Barbara Billingsley, is the place for down home, old fashioned lick-your-fingers American food that is dog gone good. Since they opened the doors to the wood-paneled dining room with cozy red booths and walls dripping with American memorabilia from Elvis to the Moon landing, Billingsley’s has become a West Los Angeles classic. This Valentine’s day Billingsley’s is featuring their “ Three Course Steak and Lobster Dinner” which includes choice of soup or salad, potato, rice or vegetables and a special heart shaped chocolate mousse cake for only 35.00 per person.

Home cooking here includes daily early bird specials (4:30 to 6:30) the likes of country pot roast, prime rib, breaded pork chops and barbeque ribs. Reminiscent mostly of days gone by, these meals are "all included," with choice of fresh soup of the day or a green salad with good 'ol iceberg lettuce, croutons made from the house's own garlic toast drenched with butter and the signature Green Goddess Dressing. The bread hits the table almost as soon as you can sit at it, the service is polite and refreshingly polished and the coffee only comes in two varieties, regular and decaf. This meaty menu is balanced by a wide selection of chicken, entrée salads, pastas and fish dishes from lobster at market price to traditional fish 'n chips or fried shrimp. For the lighter appetite, there is a selection of old school appetizers including nachos, fried calamari, potato skins, stuffed mushrooms and shrimp cocktail and a thorough sandwich and burger menu. The dessert "tray" features treats such as fresh carrot cake with a uniquely light buttercream frosting, but for the upcoming day of the heart, consider their signature strawberry shortcake for two.

King's Kabob - All "Greek" for Taste

If you're driving west on Sawtelle off Sepulveda, don't blink, otherwise you might miss this cute, take-out window cafe, stocked with some of the most authentic Greek food to be found.

The Spanakopita (spinach and cheese pie) is reason enough to visit, with the requisite lightly layered crust as thin as air and melts in your mouth. The kabobs - chicken, beef, lamb and kafta (a mixture of ground beef and spices) are grilled fresh before your eyes, which you can close if you like and listen to the meat spit and sizzle while breathing in the Mediterranean aromas of fresh onion, parsley and spices. Most entrees are served with rice, fresh hummus, cucumber yogurt and warm pita bread. The falafel is just right and the cucumber salad is diced and drizzled in oil and spices to perfection.

Indulge in some traditional baklava, if you dare to endure the richness.

Go Greek at King's Kabob and you are sure to go Greek again as this healthy, flavor-rich fare is sure to become a favorite. Be sure to try their complete breakfast plates served all day Monday- Sunday.
