The spectacular Culver City High girl’s varsity basketball team improved its record to 17-5, including 6-0 in the Ocean League, with two more victories last week.
The Centaurs defeated Beverly Hills, 60-40 and Morningside, 70-20.
The Centaurs won the league championship last season and have a current league winning streak of 16 games.
“Practices have picked up,” said Coach Julian Anderson. “The players are paying attention to details.”
Asked if practices have been harder than the games Anderson replied:
“They’d better be.”
Sophomore guard Katie Linn said the Centaurs were so far ahead in one game they worked on new things that may enable them to combat tougher challenges in the future, including CIF playoffs.
Prior to Culver beginning a dominance of the league Santa Monica was the league’s powerhouse over five seasons. However, Coach Marty Verdugo, who had turned the Vikings into one of Southern California’s premier girl’s basketball programs, resigned to open a training facility for high school players. This season, Santa Monica has a 2-19 record, with its only league win coming against Morningside.
The Culver boy’s varsity competed well in two road games but lost them both – 48-38 to Beverly Hills and 41-40 to Morningside, bringing the overall record to 5-16.
The Centaurs, playing on their home court, had several opportunities to score a winning basket against Morningside but couldn’t do it.
“We’re in every game because of our defense but we haven’t broken through on offense,” said Coach Adam Eskridge. “The effort we make on defense has been outstanding.”
Morningside didn’t score in the final five minutes after taking a 41-36 lead but defeated Culver for the second time this season. The score of the first meeting was 46-40.
