Grizzly Suicide on West Washington

In what has been determined to be a suicide a 56 year old man's body decapitated was found next to the parking structure at the Kaiser Permanente facility on West Washington Blvd. in Culver City Monday afternoon.

The Los Angeles County Coroner has identified the man as Mark James Hateley of Los Angeles.

Culver City Police were called just before 3 p.m. by hospital security to report the body at 12001 Washington Blvd. The head had been severed from the man's body and was found next to it.

Culver Police confirm the man committed suicide by jumping off the roof of the parking structure with a rope around his neck due to blood found on the building and location that his body was lying in the bushes next to the parking structure.

Records show Hateley had been a resident of Orange County and had been convicted in Orange County Superior Court of driving under the influence in October. He was placed on five years’ probation and ordered to pay a $390 Fine.

It was the fourth reported suicide in Culver City this year.

In March, the body of Valerie Nash was found in her home in the 3600 block of Keystone Avenue. The 47-year-old woman wrote a suicide note before putting a buzzing chainsaw to her neck, authorities said.

On July 5, Charles Edward Drake III of San Pedro died after setting himself on fire outside a self-help facility in the 6600 block of Green Valley Circle.

Later in July a 57-year-old Westside man took his life outside the landmark Sony Pictures Plaza building in Downtown Culver City. He died from a single gunshot wound.
